The Stockholm International Water Institute (SIWI) is organising the next World Water Week on 25-29 August 2024. World Water Week is the leading conference on global water issues, held every year since 1991, and the theme for this year’s conference is “Bridging Borders: Water for a Peaceful and Sustainable Future“.
Key topic areas
Key topic areas for this year’s water week include:
- “Water diplomacy. Solving conflicts through diplomacy has become more complicated and the past may not be a good guide to the future. This is particularly true with water as scarcity, pollution, overuse, and climate change increase uncertainty in already complex physical, social, and economic systems. Sessions linked to this topic should help formal and informal actors to share information, experience, and knowledge.
- Transboundary cooperation. The topic covers different aspects of joint management of shared water resources for peace and cooperation, including how water dialogues can transform tensions into opportunities for cooperation.
- Food and nutrition security. Sessions on this topic could relate water to the role of food and nutrition security in conflict prevention as well as conflict escalation, including political, technical, and financial aspects.
- Innovation and resilience. Building on previous World Water Weeks, sessions can analyze the connection between innovation, economic development, and security. What is the role of the private sector in achieving this?
- Governance. The role of governance is critical when it comes to defusing tensions and preventing conflicts from escalating. It is important to learn from experiences from different contexts and analyze how governance structures can be more dynamic, flexible, and participatory.”

World Water Week 2024 will take place on 25-29 August. This is a hybrid event with events taking place digitally and in-person in Stockholm.
The venue for in-person participation is the Stockholm Waterfront Congress Centre, Nils Erikson Plan 4, 111 64 Stockholm, Sweden.
