The Future Week at Lund University is a joint university initiative with the aim of giving the university the opportunity to raise important and crucial issues for the future under a common theme. This year’s theme is “Breakthroughs” in all of their conceivable forms.

Theme

What breakthroughs are needed in research and across society for us to tackle the future in the most effective way? What breakthroughs are we expecting to happen soon? And at what point during the creative process can we talk about breakthroughs?

Breaking through, shifting the boundaries and expanding fields of knowledge are all parts of every researcher’s dream. Breakthroughs can be sudden and dramatic, even leading to a change in world view. They can also take the form of such slow processes that we only realise they fundamentally changed society when we look back in hindsight.

A breakthrough can also have a downside; did it lead to unexpected consequences? For example, was the breakthrough invention of the combustion engine a success or a catastrophe? What is needed to overcome the obstacles required for a bre¬akthrough to happen? And when does a failed breakthrough become a breakdown?
