Event summary: Launch of the collective volume "The Anthropology of Resource Extraction".

Our Institutional member Nordic Africa Institute (NAI) is organizing the online launch of the collective volume “The Anthropology of Resource Extraction” (Routledge, 2022). The webinar will be hosted by NAI in collaboration with the Gold Matters project and the European Association of Social Anthropologists’ Anthropology of Mining Network.

About the book

The book edited by L. D’Angelo and R. Pijpers offers an overview and analyses a range of anthropological debates
about the ways in which different actors extract, use, manage, and think about resources. Resources play a crucial role in the contemporary economy and society, are required in the production of a vast range of consumer products and are at the core of geopolitical strategies and environmental concerns for the future of humanity.

Programme

The launch will bring chapter presentations by all contributing authors together with discussants Professor Jessica M. Smith, Colorado School of Mines, USA, and Dr Jerry Jacka, University of Colorado Boulder, USA. The webinar will be moderated by Eleanor Fisher, Head of Research, The Nordic Africa Institute.

After an initial welcome speech by Eleanor Fisher, the two leading authors will present the collective work. A recorded chapter presentation will then follow. Before the closing remarks, the moderator will open the floor for a Q&A session.

Remember that in order to join the seminar online, attendance by registration is required. The seminar will be held in English.
