Why do technology-based interventions often reinforce racial and gender inequalities? Join the Swedish South Asian Studies Network (SASNET) on 26 November 2024 for a seminar featuring Assistant Professor Janwillem Liebrand from Utrecht University as he presents insights from his latest book, Whiteness in Engineering Tracing Technology, Masculinity and Race in Nepal’s Development.

In this seminar, Janwillem Liebrand will explore water management, land rights, and food security through an actor-oriented and feminist lens, highlighting the influence of engineering and technical expertise in development projects across Nepal.

About the book:

Whiteness in Engineering: Tracing Technology, Masculinity, and Race in Nepal’s Development (2022) explores how engineering practices in Nepal often reinforce racial and gender inequalities rather than promote social change. Through vivid “dioramas” of real-life scenarios in water and food management, the book questions the role of engineers in development, encouraging new perspectives on achieving sustainability goals.

Please note that it is possible to attend the seminar in person or online.
